Understanding Cesarean Birth: Exploring Options and Empowering Choices

April marks Cesarean Awareness Month. While cesareans (C-Sections) can be life-saving and necessary procedures, there are also complexities surrounding cesarean births and the importance of informed decision-making.

In the United States, nearly 1 in 3 babies are delivered by cesarean, totaling over 1.1 million cesarean births in 2020 alone. While cesareans can indeed save lives, each procedure carries risks, including the increased likelihood of developing Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) with each subsequent cesarean.

Experts estimate that almost half of the cesareans performed in the U.S. could be safely avoided. By reducing non-medically necessary cesareans, we can mitigate the risks associated with PAS and improve outcomes for both mothers and babies.

At Colorado Birth & Wellness, our mission is to educate and empower women and birthing individuals about their options during childbirth. We believe in the importance of informed decision-making and providing comprehensive support to ensure the best possible outcomes for our clients.

While cesarean birth can be life-saving for the fetus, the mother, or both, it's crucial to explore all available options and weigh the risks and benefits carefully. We're encouraged by the increasing rates of Vaginal Birth after Cesarean (VBAC), highlighting a growing recognition of the importance of supporting women who choose this path.

This Cesarean Awareness Month, let's continue to advocate for informed choices, reduce unnecessary interventions, and prioritize the health and well-being of mothers and babies alike. Together, we can work towards safer and more empowering childbirth experiences!
